Firmware updates are key to keeping your VMG device secure and running smoothly. This guide will show you how to update the firmware on your VMG, with steps specific to different models.
Check the release notes for your device before updating. Some models require updates to be installed in order, while others allow you to jump to the latest version. Following the correct process prevents issues and ensures a successful update.
No matter your VMG model, following the proper update process ensures your device operates at its best. Let’s dive into the steps you need to take to keep your VMG current!
Firmware Upgrade VMG8825 (New GUI)
Firmware Upgrade Overview This screen lets you upload new firmware to your Zyxel Device. You can download new firmware releases from the Download library. Only use firmware for your device’s specific model. For more information, refer to the label on the bottom of your Zyxel Device.
- The Firmware Screen Click Maintenance > Firmware Upgrade to open the following screen.
- Download the latest firmware file from the Zyxel website and upload it to your Zyxel Device using this screen. The upload process uses HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) and may take up to two minutes. After a successful upload, the Zyxel Device will reboot.
- Do NOT turn off the Zyxel Device while firmware upload is in progress!
- After two minutes, log in again and check your new firmware version on the Status screen.
If the upload is not successful, the following screen will appear.

Firmware Upgrade VMG1312 (Old GUI)
- Login on your Device via Web GUI
- Enter the Zyxel administrative credentials: username=admin and password=1234. You can also enter the ISP proprietary administrator credentials, which must be obtained from the ISP.
- After the Zyxel default credentials are entered, a prompt will appear to create a new admin password. Create a new password and press the Apply button to save the settings, or check the box "No need to change password. Do not show this page next time" and click Apply to keep the default password.
- To upgrade the firmware on the VMG device, please click on the Maintenance menu and select "Firmware Upgrade" from the list.
- In the firmware upgrade menu, click the Browse button to search for the software patch downloaded to your computer. Once the correct patch is selected, click Upload on the far right to begin the firmware upgrade procedure. The process takes about 5 minutes; internet traffic will slow down during updating.

There is no "Firmware Upgrade" option on the Maintenance menu. A quick Google search shows this is a common issue.
Same problem here, and so far cannot find solution, where is my "Firmware Upgrade" button? It may be fixed with the present issue but as far I cannot upgrade the firmware I will not have Firmware Upgrade button.
When I upload the .bin file, my router gives a message that the file is invalid. It won't allow me to perform the update.
Dear John Hopkin, Tibor Tóth and Brent Engelbrecht,
Sorry for the late reply.
Which Firmware Version and VMG Model are You using?
I'm using a VMG3625-T20A.
I downloaded the firmware from the website yesterday
https://download.zyxel.com/VMG3625-T20A/firmware/VMG3625-T20A_5.30(ABIE.5)C0.zip
Dear Brent Engelbrecht,
As mentioned by my Colleague, In Your Support ticket, You are using the Version H1 which is a specialised ISP Version.
You downloaded the C0 from our Server which is our Zyxel (unbranded) Software.
This version is not compatible with Devices that use a specialised Firmware like the H1 on Your Device.
Please get in touch with Your ISP in order to get the latest Firmware Update.

VMG3925-B10B, not sure what the Firmware version is. I can't find it anywhere, maybe because the Firmware Upgrade menu is missing?
I'm under the impression that this is an issue I would need to take up with my ISP, who supplied the unit. Is that correct?
Dear John,
If the Device was provided by Your ISP then Yes.
You need to create a non-Admininstrator User account in Maintenance > User Account and login with that User account in order to see Maintenance > Firmware Upgrade.
Dear Mr Ponder,
Which VMG and Firmware are You using?
VMG3925-B10B latest firmware. But not seeing the Firmware Upgrade is a common comment in this article and has not been addressed.
@Jason - many thanks, creating a non-admin user let me access the Firmware Upgrade option, and I'm now up-to-date.
Jason Ponder John Hopkin
As mentioned already above, If the Device came from an ISP, the Firmware upgrade is locked with the Admin User (That is correct).
If the device comes with a firmware provided by us (e.g. VMG3625-T20A_5.30(ABIE.5)C0 -> emphasis on the C0)
Then the Admin must be able to upgrade the Firmware.
My device didn’t come from an ISP. No matter what you say, to see Firmware Upgrade you need to log in with a non-admin user account. This works as confirmed by me and John Hopkin above.
Dear Jason Ponder
I tested it here on my End with a VMG3925-B10B:
Boot base version: V1.63 | 12/17/2018 15:01:03
Firmware version: V5.13(AAVF. 1 3)C0
Kernel version: 3.4.11
DSL modem code version: A2pv6F039x6
DSL driver version: d26u
WLAN code version: 7.14.164.23.cpe4.16L05.0 kdb
3G WWAN package version: 1.18
Username: admin (default Credentials)
Password: 1234 (default Credentials)
I have the same unit/firmware but I don’t get the Firmware Upgrade option unless I log in as a non-admin user account. I can see no way to add screenshots here.
Dear Jason Ponder,
If You are okay with it, I will create a Ticket for this Issue.
Then You can send it to me via e-Mail.
