"What does it take to Deploy a GPON Solution?" is a frequently asked question we get about xPON.
In this article, we will take a look at exactly this Topic using our example Configuration from the Customer Experience Center.
Questions to ask:
- What is to achieve?
- What kind of Budget is available?
- What is our Project Scope? (How big is the Project?)
- Can our Budget take on the Project?
- How many Bandwidth is needed?
- How many Bandwidth is possible at the location of the Project?
- Do I need training in the GPON Solution? (What is my experience with GPON?)
Answers (In regards to our CXC Sample Project):
- A common but yet flexible Installation
- Needs to cover most Topics of a GPON Deployment
- Needs to be flexible in Case a Customer wants to see a different Deployment
- We did not focus on this since this was an internal Project
- One Installation with probably 2-4 ONT's and a few End Devices incl.
- VoIP
- CCTV
- IPTV
- WiFi Deployment
- Yes
- Calculation (~620.4 Mbps):
- CCTV (~4Mbps)
- 2 FHD CCTV Cameras
- ~2Mbps per Stream
- VoIP (~400kbps)
- 4 Simultaneously VoIP Stream's max. (2 VoIP Phones)
- ~100kpbs per Stream
- IPTV (~16 Mbps)
- 1 FHD MCast Stream (~8Mbps)
- Currently 2 ONT's connected (2 Streams max.)
- WiFi (~600 Mbps 2.4G Only)*
- Currently, 2 ONT's connected
- 2.4G WiFi 300Mbps
- CCTV (~4Mbps)
- Currently a 500 Mbps Fibre
- No, experience with GPON is sufficient
*Please keep in mind that:
- this can change
- Usually, there is some sort of Bandwidth Limitation in Place
So our total Consumption with 2 ONT's would be ~620 Mbps.
So (on a 2.4 Gbps GPON) we could, in Theory, Use 4 ONT's Simultaneously (per PON Port) and pull the full 620 Mbps on each ONT since we opted to use 10G SFP+ as our Uplink (Not considering WAN Traffic!).
The Core Network:
This leads us to the Core Network, where all our Key Services are located.
Since we use a GSS Multicast Streamer and we need Multicast Routing, due to the Multicast using his own Subnet and VLAN, the choice fell to the XGS4600 as Core Switch.
From there we run a 2Gbps LACP to the XGS2210 which goes into the OLT Uplink.
We chose the XGS2210 because we needed a capable top Tier Switch, due to the Performance demands of the Multicast Stream.
If we break down the Bandwidth Demands from earlier, our LACP is currently capable of Handling 2048 Mbps of throughput, of which we are currently using 2x 20.4 Mbps (fixed).
So our current Saturation sits around 2%.
Due to the 10Gbps Capability of the XGS4600 and 2210, we could (should the total Bandwidth Consumption at some Point in Time require it) run a 10Gbps Link instead of the 2Gbps LACP.
In this example, we also thought about possible future complications due to increased Bandwidth demands.
Conclusion:
What can we conclude out of this?
- Planning an xPON installation is not that difficult.
- The Bandwidth calculations are very similar to a "standard" Installation.
- An Important Part is thinking about the Expandability of the Installation for possible additional demands in the Future.
