This article will show you how to set up your Nebula devices with a Management VLAN. A VLAN is a virtual network that allows multiple networks to exist on the same physical network. By configuring a Management VLAN on a Nebula switch, you can enhance network security by separating management traffic from user traffic. In this guide, we will walk you through the process of configuring a Management VLAN on a Nebula switch using the Nebula control center.
Disclaimer! This article offers a general overview of the series and may not apply uniformly to every model,
software/firmware version. Before purchasing or using the device, please consult the model/version-specific documentation or reach out to technical support for accurate information.
Note: Changing the management (MGMT) VLAN on network switches can cause issues with configuration synchronization, particularly when there are switches on different layers within the network hierarchy.
Recommendation to Change MGMT VLAN: Before deployment recommend changing the management VLAN for network switches. This is typically done for security reasons or to organize network traffic more effectively.
Impact on Production Site: However, changing the management VLAN on a production site can lead to complications, especially when dealing with a multi-layered network infrastructure.
Configuration Synchronization Issues or Disconnection of Lower-Layer Switches: When the management VLAN is changed, upper-layer switches may receive the new configuration first. This means that they switch to the new management VLAN while the lower-layer switches may still be configured with the old management VLAN.
Resolution: If you do change the management VLANs at the production site, you may need to perform corrective actions on-site. This may involve either resetting the switches to factory defaults and re-adding the devices to Nebula or accessing the local GUI of each switch to manually set the default VLAN to the new management VLAN.
Configure a Management VLAN on a Nebula switch
- Log in to the Nebula control center using your account credentials
- Go to Configure > Switches > Switch settings
- Change "Management VLAN" In our example we use VLAN100
- Click the "Save" button to save the VLAN configuration
After changing the managed VLAN you can start adding switches to Nebela or as it was said before, you may need to connect locally to the WEB GUI of your switches to make changes to the managed VLAN manually, or even reset the switch to the factory defaults and then re-add the device to Nebela.
Change the management VLAN on the switch
Set the IP info manually or set the switch to obtain the IP info from your DHCP server. By default the switch can only be accessed through VLAN1, you can change the management VLAN if you are planning to access the configuration screen through a different VLAN.
- Login to local Web GUE on your device
Go to Configuration > System > IP
- Change the Management VLAN
- Push "Apply" button
