When configuring the Zyxel USG FLEX H Series Firewall for the first time, Internet access is essential for initialization and accessing the web interface. If you use a DSL modem in bridge mode without VLAN tagging capabilities, or if your Internet connection requires VLAN tagging, you might encounter difficulties connecting the firewall to the Internet. In earlier firmware versions, VLAN tag settings may not be available in the configuration wizard, which can be confusing.
Key Points
- Internet access is required for the initial startup and Web GUI.
- Older Firmware Versions lack VLAN tagging configuration in the wizard.
- Firmware Update is necessary to unlock VLAN tagging capabilities during setup.
The solution to this issue is straightforward: use an internet connection that does not require a VLAN tag on the firewall. The article includes more details below.
In connecting to the Internet, you can configure a PPPoE connection, DHCP, or a static IP address. However, VLAN tagging configuration may not be available in this step.
If you have a newer version installed on your device, this step will allow you to configure the VLAN tag, as shown below.
Solutions
- Firmware Versions lack VLAN tagging configuration in the wizard.
The solution to this issue is straightforward: use an internet connection that does not require a VLAN tag on the firewall.
- Interface Type - DHCP or Static
- Check that the cable is connected from the WAN port (port 1 or port 2) to the Internet.
- Check that the interface is connected to the device you’re using for Internet access such as a broadband router, and that the router is turned on.
- If your Zyxel Device was not able to obtain an IP address, check that your Internet access information uses DHCP as the WAN connection type. If it fails again, check with your Internet service provider or administrator for the correct WAN settings.
- If your Zyxel Device was not able to use the IP address entered, check that you enter correctly the IP address, subnet mask and gateway IP address exactly as given. If it fails again, check with your Internet service provider or administrator for the correct IP address, subnet mask and gateway address and other WAN settings.
- Interface Type - PPPoE
- Make sure that your Internet access information uses PPPoE as the WAN connection type.
- Re-enter your PPPoE username and password exactly as given.
- If it fails again, check with your Internet service provider or administrator for the correct WAN settings and user credentials.
