Zyxel Access Point [Console] - How to use the console port to Access Points

In this article, we will outline the appropriate console cable to use for connecting to an access point and provide step-by-step instructions for establishing a connection using PuTTY or Tera Term.

Suitable cable

The USB TTL cable is the cable with four pins including one pin with a triangle icon, please connect the USB TTL cable to AP by console cable’s pin with a triangle in the place of the AP console pin with a triangle icon (pin 1).

The USB TTL cable is as below image, please follow Zyxel’s console header pin definition: 

  • Pin1  NA (leave empty )
  • Pin3 Green (TX)
  • Pin2 White (RX)
  • Pin4 Black (GND)
  •  Remember that don’t connect red color pin to Zyxel’s console pin.

Connection process

  • Connect the cable to your access point as described in the previous step.
  • Run the application (in our example, we use Tera Term) 
  • Set "Serial" and choose the Port to which the cable is connected, as in the picture below. 
  • In the Tera Term window that opens, click “Setup”
  • Select - Serial Port
  • In the “Speed” field, set 115200
  • Click  "New settings."
  • In the newly opened console window, you may need to press “Enter” to refresh the connection and see that the connection to the access point was successful.
  • Now, enter the username and password for your access point.
