The Zyxel USG LITE 60AX is a modern Wi-Fi 6 security router that supports Smart Mesh, a technology designed to extend wireless coverage seamlessly without complex cabling. Smart Mesh operates within the Zyxel Nebula ecosystem, allowing the security router and compatible Nebula access points to form a unified, intelligent wireless network.
What Is Smart Mesh?
Smart Mesh is a Zyxel technology that enables Nebula-managed devices—such as the USG LITE 60AX and supported access points—to automatically create a wireless mesh network. The system dynamically selects the optimal wireless path between nodes, providing:
Flexible Wi-Fi coverage expansion without additional Ethernet cabling
Seamless roaming for wireless clients across the network
Automatic path and channel optimization to maintain stable performance
Smart Mesh is especially useful in offices, multi-floor buildings, and environments where traditional cabling is impractical.
Prerequisites Before Enabling Smart Mesh
Before enabling Smart Mesh, ensure the following requirements are met:
The USG LITE 60AX and access points are registered under the same Nebula organization and site
At least one Nebula-supported access point is available, with Smart Mesh support
All devices show an “Up to date” configuration status in Nebula Control Center
Once these conditions are satisfied, you can proceed with the configuration.
Step-by-Step Guide to Enable Smart Mesh
1. Enable Smart Mesh on the USG LITE 60AX
Log in to the Nebula Control Center (NCC) via web interface or the Nebula mobile app.
Navigate to:
Site-wide > Configure > Security Router > Router settingsLocate Smart Mesh under General settings and enable the option.
Click Save to apply the configuration.
Enable Smart Mesh on the Access Point
In NCC, go to:
Site-wide > Configure > Access Points > AP & port settingsEnable Smart Mesh on the selected access point.
Save the configuration.
Initial Wired Connection (Mandatory)
For the initial Smart Mesh pairing:
Connect the access point to the USG LITE 60AX using an Ethernet cable.
Wait until both devices show “Up to date” status in Nebula Control Center.
This wired connection is required only for initial provisioning.
Before proceeding, please do verify that the configuration statuses for both the USG LITE 60AX and the AP are shown as "Up to date".
Deploy the Access Point as a Mesh Repeater
Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the access point.
Move the access point to the desired location where coverage extension is needed
Recommended distance: 10–15 meters with minimal obstructions
Power on the access point. It will automatically establish a 5 GHz wireless mesh uplink.
Verify the mesh status in NCC:
Uplink Band
Signal Strength (recommended better than −75 dBm)
Configure a SSID for the Repeater AP
Have clients try to associate with this Repeater AP and browse the Internet to test the user experience over the mesh network.
