How to Reset the Zyxel IAP500BE Access Point to Factory Defaults

The Zyxel IAP500BE access point supports multiple management modes, including Standalone mode, Nebula Control Center (cloud-managed mode), and AP Controller (APC) mode.

In some situations—such as forgotten administrator credentials, incorrect configuration, device redeployment, or changing the management mode—it may be necessary to reset the device to factory default settings.

After a factory reset, all custom settings are erased, and the device returns to its default configuration. This article describes three official methods to reset the Zyxel IAP500BE, as documented in the Zyxel User’s Guide.

Note: If the Zyxel IAP500BE access point has previously been added to Nebula Control Center, performing a factory reset does not remove the device from Nebula.

This means that even after a factory reset, as soon as the access point:

  • obtains an IP address, and

  • has access to the Internet

it will automatically reconnect to Nebula Control Center and download its configuration from the organization it is still assigned to.

⚠️ If you plan to completely reset the device and use it in Standalone mode, make sure to:

  • remove the access point from the Nebula organization first
(Organization → Site → Devices → Remove device)

Only after removing the device from Nebula and performing a factory reset will the access point remain in Standalone mode and not automatically receive cloud configuration.

Method 1. Factory Reset Using the RESET Button (Hardware Reset)

This is the most common and universal reset method.

Steps:

  1. Make sure the IAP500BE is powered on.

  2. Locate the RESET button on the device.

  3. Press and hold the RESET button for approximately 10 seconds.

  4. Release the button when the LED indicates that the device is rebooting.

  5. Wait until the reboot process is completed.

Result:

  • The access point is restored to factory default settings.

  • The management mode is reset to Standalone mode.

  • The device will obtain an IP address via DHCP, or use the default IP address 192.168.1.2 if no DHCP server is available.

Method 2. Factory Reset Using Zyxel ZON Utility

This method is convenient when managing devices within the same local network.

Requirements:

  • A Windows PC

  • Zyxel One Network (ZON) Utility installed

  • Administrator password for the device

Steps:

  • Launch ZON Utility.

  • Select the correct network adapter and scan for devices

  • Locate IAP500BE in the device list.

  • Select the device and click Reset Configuration to Default.

  • Enter the administrator password and confirm.

Result:

  • The factory default configuration file is applied.

  • The access point reboots automatically.

Additional Notes

  • A factory reset removes all local configuration, including SSIDs, passwords, VLANs, and management settings.

  • If the device was previously managed by Nebula Control Center or an AP Controller, it must be removed from the management platform to prevent automatic re-provisioning.

  • It is strongly recommended to back up the configuration before performing a reset, if access to the device is still available.
