Firewall High Availability HA Pro - Firmware Update in Device HA Mode

How to update the firmware of ZyWALL USG series devices operating in Device HA (Master-Backup) mode without interrupting the work in the local network?

The update algorithm is as follows:

1. Choose the running partition on the active device.

2. When you upload the firmware on the active device, it will first transfer and install the firmware on the passive device.

3. After the passive device is finished with the reboot process, the active device will perform the firmware update and reboot.

4. It will take around 10 to 20 minutes for the whole process.

  • Not in my case. Devices USG Flex 500 were on firmware V5.21(ABUJ.1) and wanted to upgrade to 5.30 because of very strange internet up/downs. I went through points 1 and 2, but point 3 did not seem to trigger automatically, not even after 40 minutes. Logged out and logged in from active device it was then saying firmware was uploading, but no progress. Then removed LAN1 from active device trigger it to become passive, but similar result with firmware upgrade not completing on the now passive device. At around 1 hour 5 minutes I rebooted the device, the upgrade was not done. I uploaded the firmware manually to the active partition of the now passive device and it performed the firmware upgrade there as well. Then HA Pro started to sync again. Maybe a firmware bug.
