Wireless - Configure Wireless Bridge (WDS) with VLAN

A corporation that owns a branch office near the headquarter requires to bridge the office traffic without use of network cables, a WDS bridge can be used to bridge the traffic as well as use VLANs (up to 8 VLAN's). This document demonstrates the use of Radio 1 configured with the WDS.

1. Scenario and Topology
A branch office gets the Internet from the headquarters through the wireless bridge. We assume two APs are in the managed VLAN with VID 22. They build the wireless bridge with 2.4G radio. The branch office provides the wired network with VLAN 10, 20 and 30 for different group users.

2. Configuration
Configure WDS profile

1. The Root and Repeater APs must use the same WDS profile to link to each other.
*Please add the same WDS profile in Root and Repeater APs.
Go to CONFIGURATION > Object > WDS Profile > WDS > Add

Configure Radio profile
2. Select the best channel and fix it. The Root and Repeater APs must
transfer the data with the same channel.
*Please add the same radio profile in Root and Repeater APs.
Go to CONFIGURATION > Object > AP Profile > Radio > Add.

Configure AP setting
3. Set the WDS profile and select the AP mode. Go to CONFIGURATION > Wireless > AP Management > WLAN Setting > Radio 1 Setting > Root AP

mceclip5.png

The repeater must enable WDS Wireless Bridging.
4.Go to CONFIGURATION > Wireless > AP Management > WLAN Setting > Radio1 Setting > Repeater AP

Configure Network setting
5. Add VLAN 10, 20 and 30 for different user group networks in the VLAN configuration.
* Please add the same VLAN setting in Root and Repeater APs. Go to CONFIGURATION > Network > VLAN > VLAN Configuration >Add> VLAN 10

mceclip7.png

Go to CONFIGURATION > Network > VLAN > VLAN Configuration >Add > VLAN 20

mceclip8.png

Go to CONFIGURATION > Network > VLAN > VLAN Configuration >Add > VLAN 30

6. Set the management VLAN ID as 22 and disable “As Native VLAN”. *Please add the same radio profile in Root and Repeater APs. Go to CONFIGURATION > Network > VLAN > VLAN Setting

7. After setting up the managed VLAN and ensuring the repeater get the IP from VLAN22, please fix the static IP on the repeater AP to avoid the administrator from failing to find the AP when the wireless
bridge is failed. Go to CONFIGURATION > Network > IP Setting

3. Test Result
1. Check the WDS information of the Root AP.
Go to DASHBOARD > Downlink Status

mceclip12.png

Go to MONITOR > Wireless > WDS Link Info > WDS Downlink Status

mceclip13.png

2. Check the WDS information of the Repeater AP.
Go to DASHBOARD > Uplink Status

mceclip14.png

Go to MONITOR > Wireless > WDS Link Info > WDS uplink Status

mceclip15.png

3. Access the repeater AP by console or ssh. Use the AP to ping the different VLAN gateways and confirm the VLAN traffic is able to pass through the AP. The repeater AP’s IP is 192.168.22.22.
The gateway of VLAN10 is 192.168.10.5, the gateway of VLAN20 is 192.168.20.5 and the gateway of VLAN30 is 192.168.30.5. The ping results are successful as the following snapshot

4. Note:
The Root AP needs to have corresponded VLAN interfaces to forward the tagged traffic to the uplink devices. i.e. The Root AP must have SSID using the same VLAN ID, or set LAN provision by using the same VLAN ID.
