Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is an application layer protocol used to manage and monitor TCP/IP-based devices. SNMP is used to exchange management information between the network management system (NMS) and a network element (NE).
An SNMP managed network consists of two main components: Agents and a Manager.
An agent is a management software module that resides in a managed switch (the Switch). An agent translates the local management information from the managed switch into a form compatible with SNMP.
What’s more, it contains object variables/managed objects that define each piece of information to be collected about a Switch. Examples of variables include number of packets received, node port status and so on. A Management Information Base (MIB) is a collection of managed objects. SNMP allows a manager and agents to communicate for the purpose of accessing these objects.
The manager is the console through which network administrators perform network management functions. It executes applications that control and monitor managed devices.
Besides, it can manage and monitor the switch through the network via SNMP version one (SNMPv1), SNMP version 2c or SNMP version 3.
1) Configure SNMP
This tutorial will show you how to set up basic SNMP configuration on our switches.
1. Access your device by entering its IP address in the browser address line and login by using the device’s credential
2. On the dashboard click on the Quick Link SNMP Status
3. Select the SNMP version you want to down below and then Configure the Get, Set and Trap Community according to your SNMP management software (default: public)
5. Configure a Trap Destination so your switch can send Traps (notifications) to SNMP management software with user-configuration trap group, then "Apply"
6. Go to:
SYSTEM > SNMP > SNMP Trap Group
Trap Group screen to specify the types of SNMP traps that should be sent to the SNMP manager and then use the Trap Port screen to select what type of Trap Group is received on which port of the switch
8. If using SNMPv3, you need to configure some user-specific parameters down below
9. To create a User, you need to go to the SNMP User screen and add the user there
Then navigate to:
SYSTEM > SNMP > SNMP User > Add/Edit User
2) Configure SNMP on Legacy GUI
