Zyxel Switch [factory-default ] - How to reset or recovery switch via console

If you have forgotten the password for a Zyxel switch or are unaware of the login credentials, or if the switch is stuck in a reboot loop and fails to boot properly, you will be unable to access the device through normal login procedures. This issue is often caused by a firmware or configuration corruption. To resolve this, the switch must be restored by reloading the appropriate `.bin` and `.rom` files. Once this process is complete, you can log in using the default credentials.

Reset GS2210-8HP Switch via Console

  • Download the ROM file from FTP

To do the factory reset, we will need the default configuration file (.ROM), which can be found on our Zyxel Download Library.

Download the firmware and extract it. You will find the .ROM in the extracted files.

  • Connect the console to the switch

Please connect the console cable to the RS232 of your switch and use a terminal emulation software such as Tera Term to connect to the switch using the COM port.

  • Power on the switch and enter the debug mode

Power on the device and wait until you see the prompt:

Press any key to enter debug mode within 1 second

Press any key to enter the debug mode.

On the screen, you will now see the following:

GS2210-8HP>
  •  The XMODEM upload mode.

By typing atlc you will start the XMODEM upload mode.

GS2210-8HP> atlc
  • Upload the ROM file
  • In Tera Term navigate to File > Transfer > XMODEM > Send...
  • In the opened window select the previously downloaded .ROM file and click "Open"
    • This will start the send process, it might take a while to upload the file to the switch.
Note: This upload may take several minutes.

Once the switch has received the ROM file, it will start overwriting the existing configuration file with the default configuration file (.ROM) and therefore resetting the switch.

When the console prompt returns to:

GS2210-8HP>

Please type in the following command:

GS2210-8HP> atgo

This will reboot the switch.

Once the SYS LED stops flashing the switch is fully booted and was set back to factory defaults, ready to be configured again.

Reset XGS4600 Switch via Console

  • Connect the switch to a PC via console cable and set the baud rate as 9600.
Power on the switch and press any key to break the boot initiation when you see the log pattern as below:
  • Type "atba 5" to set the switch console baud rate as 115200 and you need to configure the terminal program baud rate as 115200. If the baud rate of your switch is already 115200, please skip this step.
  • Type “atlc” and use XMODEM to send the latest .rom file.
    (File > Transfer > XMODEM > Send)

  • Type "atur" and use XMODEM to send the latest .bin file.
    (File > Transfer > XMODEM > Send)

  • After uploading the .rom file, please type "atgo" to reboot the switch. Then the switch's console baud rate will change to 9600.

  • Set your terminal program baud rate as 9600, and wait for boot initialization.
  • User can now login with default user-name and password.
