Zyxel FWA Series Router APN and Roaming - Manually Set Up APN and Enable Roaming for Zyxel FWA Routers

Manually configuring the Access Point Name (APN) on Zyxel LTE devices can resolve connectivity issues, especially when automatic settings fail due to network compatibility problems. Below is a comprehensive guide to help you set up the APN manually. This article will guide you through the manual setup process for APN settings on Zyxel 5G devices, including models such as FWA710, FWA505, FWA515, and FWA510. For demonstration purposes, we will use the Zyxel FWA505 as an example.

Why Manual APN Configuration May Be Necessary

Zyxel LTE devices typically retrieve APN settings automatically from the SIM card. However, in cases where the SIM card defaults to an IPv6 network, the device might encounter difficulties establishing a connection on an IPv4 network, leading to internet access issues. Manually setting the APN allows you to specify the network type and ensure compatibility with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) requirements.

Access the Device Interface

  • Connect your computer to the Zyxel LTE device via Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
  • Open a web browser and enter the device's IP address (192.168.1.1) to access the web interface.
  • Log in using your credentials. If unchanged, the default username and password are usually printed on the device label.

Important: When accessing the Web Configurator on FWA710, make sure to use the correct IP address based on your connection type:

How to Check APN Settings

On WebGUI, go to Menu > Network Setting > Broadband > Cellular APN

On the console, use the command cfg cellwan_mapn get to check that the settings of the APN profile are correct.

cfg cellwan_mapn get

Navigate to APN Settings and Enter APN Details

  • Go to Network Settings → Broadband → Cellular APN.
  • Enable APN Manual Mode and manually enter:

For Telekom Germany:

  • APN: internet.telekom
  • IP Type: IPv4 or IPv4/IPv6
  • Apply the settings and reboot the device.

To avoid configuration errors, please verify the correct APN details through your mobile service provider's official resources before entering them manually.

Save and Apply Settings

  • After entering the necessary information, click OK or Apply to save the settings.
  • Restart the device to ensure the new settings take effect.

Enable Roaming Mode

Another potential solution when the device recognizes the SIM card but cannot connect to the internet is enabling roaming mode. Some operators require roaming to be turned on even within the same country or region.

For example, a SIM card purchased in London from provider EE may need roaming enabled in order to function properly when used in Scotland.

To enable roaming:

  • Access the router's Web GUI.

  • Navigate to Network Settings > Broadband > Cellular Band.

  • Locate the Data Roaming option and switch it On.

Additional Tips and Troubleshooting

  • Verify APN Information: Double-check the APN details with your ISP to ensure accuracy.
  • Restart the Device: After applying new settings, a reboot can help establish a fresh connection.
  • Contact ISP Support: If issues persist, consult your ISP to confirm that your SIM card is active and supports the desired network type.
  • Firmware Updates: Ensure your device's firmware is up to date, as updates can resolve compatibility issues.
