Updating your device ensures better security, improved performance, and access to the latest features. Stay safe and get the best experience by keeping your system up to date.
1. Power & Hardware Check
If your Zyxel 5G router fails to detect the SIM card or connect to the network, start by checking the basics.
Some models require the SIM card to be inserted before powering on. Inserting it later may cause detection issues. Also, make sure the SIM card is correctly and fully inserted — improper placement can prevent network registration.
- Insert the SIM card before powering on the device.
- Ensure the SIM card is correctly inserted into the Zyxel device.
- Verify that the power adapter is securely connected and powered on the device.
Instructions for the initial startup of the device are available here:
2. Basic Troubleshooting Steps
Check if you have a working SIM card inserted
- Ensure the SIM card is properly inserted into the router's SIM slot.
- Verify that the SIM card is active and has an active data plan.
- If the SIM card requires a PIN code, make sure it is entered correctly in the router's settings.
3. Check the SIM status and check if SIM card is locked
| On WebGUI, go to Menu > System Monitor > Cellular WAN Status. | Console command: cfg cellwan_sim get to check if |
If your SIM card isn't recognized
Here's a step-by-step guide on what to do when a Zyxel 5G router cannot recognize the SIM card:
Check the SIM card insertion: Ensure that the SIM card is inserted correctly into the SIM slot of the 5G router. Sometimes, a loose or improperly inserted SIM card can prevent the router from recognising it. Carefully remove and reinsert the SIM card, ensuring it is properly seated in the designated slot.
Test with a known working SIM card
Verify the plastic cover (for outdoor routers):
Check the LED status of the device
- Refer to the LED indicators on the router to determine its current status.
- Consult the ➡️ LED Behaviour Guide for detailed information on LED meanings.
Access the Web GUI
- Connect your computer to the router via Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
- Open a web browser and navigate to
http://192.168.1.1. - Log in using the default credentials (found on the router's label) or your customized credentials.
3. Firmware upgrade
Upgrading the firmware can fix issues, improve device stability, and enhance signal quality, as the latest firmware often includes updates for the radio module.
- Connect to the FWA505’s Wi-Fi network and open a browser:
http://192.168.1.1orhttp://fwa.zyxel. - Log in using the admin account (default:
admin / 1234). - Go to Maintenance > Firmware Upgrade.
- Click Check for Updates, then Upgrade if a new version is available.
- Wait for the process to complete — the device will reboot automatically.
A detailed step-by-step guide is available: ➡️ Zyxel Nebula 5G Routers [FWA Series] - How to Update Firmware and Radio Modules on Zyxel FWA 5G Routers
Accessing the Device Interface (Web GUI)
- Open a web browser and go to the default IP address: 192.168.1.1
- If you can’t access the interface or forgot the IP, reset the device by holding the Reset button for more than 5 seconds.
- Make sure pop-ups are allowed and JavaScript is enabled in your browser.
- Confirm that you're using the correct username and password. If in doubt, reset the device.
4. Manually Configure APN Settings
In some cases, the router may not automatically retrieve the correct APN settings from your mobile provider. If your device shows "SIM Detected but no internet access," try the following steps:
- Access the router's Web GUI.
- Navigate to Network Settings > Broadband > Cellular Band.
- Set APN Configuration to Manual.
- Enter the APN details provided by your mobile operator.
For detailed instructions, refer to the ➡️ Manual APN Setup Guide.
5. Enable Roaming Mode
Another potential solution when the device recognizes the SIM card but cannot connect to the internet is enabling roaming mode. Some operators require roaming to be turned on even within the same country or region.
For example, a SIM card purchased in London from provider EE may need roaming enabled in order to function properly when used in Scotland.
To enable roaming:
Access the router's Web GUI.
Navigate to Network Settings > Broadband > Cellular Band.
Locate the Data Roaming option and switch it On.
6. Optimize Signal Strength and Band Selection
To improve the stability and speed of your 5G/4G connection:
- Open the Web GUI and go to Network Settings > Broadband > Cellular Band.
- Change the Access Technology setting from
NR5G-SA/NR5G-NSA/4G (Auto Switch)to another mode likeNR5G-NSA/4G, depending on network conditions. - Use the Zyxel Air app to locate the best placement for the router and determine the direction of the strongest signal.
- Monitor signal quality indicators such as RSRP and SINR to optimize positioning.
For more information, see the ➡️ FWA505 Troubleshooting Guide
7. Resolve Nebula Offline Status
If your device appears offline in Nebula but is connected to the internet:
- Double-check that the APN configuration allows full internet access.
- Ensure no firewall or ISP restrictions are blocking outbound ports (e.g., 443, 6667, 4335).
- Make sure the device was correctly registered using the correct serial number and MAC address.
- You can try deregistering the device from Nebula and adding it again manually.
- Also verify that the device can resolve
nebula.zyxel.comby using ping or DNS testing tools in the Web GUI.
For comprehensive troubleshooting, consult the ➡️ Nebula Offline Diagnosis Guide.
8. Physical Placement & External Antenna Recommendations
The physical placement of your FWA505 or FWA510 router significantly affects signal strength and overall performance. Here are some best practices:
- Verify the antenna mode selection: If the router is set to external antenna mode but no external antenna is connected, the device will fail to establish a connection with the internet provider. Ensure the correct antenna mode is selected based on your setup.
- Position Near a Window: Place the router close to a window or an external wall facing the nearest mobile base station. Avoid placing it inside cabinets, behind thick walls, or near large metal objects.
- Room Variability: Signal strength can vary between rooms due to differences in wall materials and interference. Experiment with different locations to find the optimal spot.
- Use Zyxel Air App: Utilize the Zyxel Air app to assess signal strength indicators like RSRP and SINR, helping you determine the best placement for your router.
-
Consider External Antennas: In areas with weak indoor mobile signals, installing an external antenna can enhance performance.
