Modern IP networks depend on the reliability of PoE devices such as IP cameras, access points, and VoIP phones.
When one of these devices stops responding, manual rebooting can cause downtime and maintenance costs.
Zyxel addresses this problem with the Auto PD Recovery feature — an intelligent mechanism that allows the switch to automatically detect and recover unresponsive PoE-powered devices (PDs).
This feature is especially valuable for video surveillance systems, ensuring uninterrupted recording and remote device availability without manual intervention.
What is Auto PD Recovery
Auto PD Recovery allows your PDs to automatically restart if they are unresponsive. You can have the switch passively monitor them via LLDP or via ping. In the event that the PD does not respond, you can configure the action to be performed.
This automated process minimizes downtime and eliminates the need for on-site intervention — crucial for remote or large-scale surveillance environments.
How to Configure Auto PD Recovery (on GS2220 Example)
Log in to the web interface.
Navigate to: PORT > Auto PD Recovery > Auto PD Recovery.
Enable the feature by selecting Active.
Choose the monitoring Mode:
LLDP – detect PD link status through LLDP packets;
Ping – send ICMP ping requests to the PD’s IP address.
Set the following parameters:
Neighbor IP – PD’s IP address;
Polling Interval – time between checks (e.g. 10 sec);
Polling Count – number of failed attempts before reboot;
Action – Reboot-Alarm (restart PD) or Alarm (log only).
(Optional) Configure delay timers:
Resume Polling Interval – delay before next monitoring cycle;
Resume Power Interval – wait time before power restoration.
Click Apply, then Save to confirm settings.
Important Notice — Check Documentation Before Purchase
Before purchasing or deploying a Zyxel switch, always review the official user guide and datasheet for the exact model and firmware version.
Feature availability and licensing requirements for Auto PD Recovery may vary depending on hardware revision and software build.
For example, the XMG1915 Series uses a simplified Auto Power Recovery function, while GS1350 Series provides an enhanced Auto PD Recovery (PD Alive Check) optimized for surveillance cameras.
