Zyxel VMG/ AMG / XMG Series [DSL Router] - Setting the VMG / XMG as Modem Bridge Mode and Disabling the LAN ports

This document provides a comprehensive guide on configuring the  VMG / AMG / XMG DSL Router series internet access device to operate in bridge mode and manage LAN port functionality. By setting the device to bridge mode, it connects via xDSL to your provider and delivers a plain Ethernet connection on port 1, with no routing or firewall tasks performed by the device. Additionally, the guide covers how to disable LAN ports 2-4 to prevent customers from receiving another DHCP IP from your DHCP server. In bridge mode, all LAN tasks, including firewall and WLAN management, are handled by the gateway connected to the VMG device.

We have two different looks of the Web GUI (will called "New" and "Old" versions):

Bridge Mode VMG Series (New Version)

  • Open an internet browser and access the web GUI of the VMG device (default is 192.168.1.1)
  • Enter your username and password, which are on default:
Username: admin
Password: 1234 (or labeled on the device)
  • Navigate to Network Settings > Broadband Menu
  • Edit the connection type you want to set into bridge mode

  • Go to Security > Firewall and disable IPv4 and IPv6 Firewall
  • After setting all up,  please reboot, the device will now operate in the bridge mode
Maintenance > Reboot

Note: The VMG can still be accessed via its management IP.

Bridge Mode AMG Series (Old Version)

  • Open an internet browser and access the web GUI of the XMG device (default is 192.168.1.1)
  • Enter your username and password, which are on default:
Username: admin
Password: 1234 (or labeled on the device)
  • Navigate to Network Settings > Broadband Menu

Bridge Mode AMG Series

  • Open an internet browser and access the web GUI of the AMG device (default is 192.168.1.1)
  • Enter your username and password, which are on default:
Username: admin
Password: 1234 (or labeled on the device)
  • Create PVC with Bridge Settings and Disable Firewall
  • Now, please reboot the device!
  • After reboot, check on LAN-Side. Here Client gets IP from over PVC 8/35:

Disable the LAN ports on VMG Device

Note:  Ensure the addition of a new WAN interface utilizing IPoE. The VLAN selected mustn't be currently in use on any switch, DSLAM, or gateway within the WAN of the CPE.

  • You need to add a new WAN interface with IPoE. Please make sure to not use a VLAN existing on any switch, DSLAM, or gateway in the WAN of the CPE
  • Create a new interface group. Here you choose the LAN ports that should be inactive. As PTM Type choose the previously created new WAN Interface

  • How do you access the management interface of the VMG after setting it to operate in bridge mode and then rebooting?

  • Dear Patrick,

    we adjusted the KB.

It now includes the answer to your question.

The management IP of the VMG will still answer.

You can access it through routing from the router/firewall or via a LAN port of the VMG (you need to set your static IP in the same subnet).

    Kind regards,
    René Kocgazi

  • I've got 3 different "types" of connections, ADSL, VDSL and ENTWAN - I'm trying to make the zyxel router a bridge to a Google Nest WIFI, so which one of these should I bridge? (I've tried all 3 at the same time) and this just shut off the pipeline to my internet

  • Dear Mr. Christensen,

please verify with your internet provider if they are providing ADSL or VDSL on your internet line.
Then you have to set this specific interface to bridge mode. Please also verify with them, if a specific VLAN tag is needed (802.1Q).
Last but not least, verify if and which PPPoE credentials you need. You need to set up this PPPoE account in the device connected behind the VMG in bridge mode.

    Thank you.

    Kind Regards,
    Lukas Bohnen
