Zyxel Network-Attached Storage NAS - how to configure and troubleshoot Windows 10 Network Share SMBv1 and SMBv2

In this tutorial, we will show you how to create a Windows network share using Zyxel NAS Series products. If you encounter issues accessing your NAS share from your Windows 10 computer, this article also explains the potential reasons and provides detailed instructions on how to re-enable SMB1 on Windows 10.

End-of-Life Product Notice: We regret to inform you that the product "Zyxel NAS Devices" has reached the end of its useful life. As a result, technical support for this device may be limited. Please be aware that any manipulation or use of a device that is already end-of-life is entirely at your own risk. You can find a list of obsolete devices, including their retirement and end-of-support dates, at the link below. This page also provides the latest updated version for your device: End of Life

Create a Windows Network Share

  • Log in to the WebGUI
  • Navigate to Shared Folders:
Go to Control Panel > Privilege and Sharing > Shared Folders.
  • Click on Add to create a new shared folder.
  • Enter a name for the new share.
  • After clicking Next, you can set permissions for users and groups.
  • On the next screen, you have the option to publish this share to media servers.
  • In the final step, review the summary of your selections and confirm.
  • Open your file browser and enter the following path to access the share:

Activate Network Shares after Zyxel NAS Reset

Once a NAS has been reset to its factory default settings, all shares are disabled. The data on these shares are still saved. To access the shares again, you simply have to activate the shares again. After confirming that the share is not disabled anymore, you can access the share again.

Troubleshooting file sharing in Windows 10

Note: Unable to access NAS share from Windows 10. Old NSA series NAS devices (NSA220 to NSA325v2) only support SMBv1, which was removed in Windows 10 Update 1709. No software updates are planned to upgrade these devices to SMBv2 or SMBv3.

Solution Options:

  1. Re-enable SMBv1 on Windows 10 (at your own risk, without support for non-Zyxel products). More info: Microsoft SMBv1 enabled.
  2. Upgrade to a new NAS series (NAS326, NAS520, NAS540, NAS542) supporting SMBv2.

Reactivate SMBv1

ZYXEL cannot accept responsibility for any damages that may occur. We strongly recommend avoiding such actions to prevent any potential issues.

  • Look for "System Control" in the Windows Start menu
  • Click Programs > Programs and Features
  • On the left side, click Turn Windows features on or off
  • The list now includes SMB 1.0 / CIFS file-sharing Support. Tick the box and click OK.
  • The feature is now installed. Please restart your PC afterwards.
  • You should now be able to reach the shares again.

  • I have a NSA210 on my home network and it has stopped working because SMBv1.0 has been removed in update 1709 from my Windows 10. I have data on my 2TB AD SATA drive within the NSA210, how can I get this off the drive and onto a new NAS?

  • Hi Andrew. I had the same issue. You need to activate SMBv1 in windows to get access to the data. I extracted my data by connecting to a switch without WAN-access just to be sure, and copied the data to a newer NAS-device. When copy was complete i discarded my old NAS and support for newer SMB-versions is the solution here... This powershell cmdlet solved the accessproblem for me:

    Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName smb1protocol

Just remember to disable it again when you are done...

    Disable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName smb1protocol

  • I'm amazed that not only did Zyxel never release an update to fix this problem but on top of that has not even considered releasing data to allow third-parties to resolve the problem on their own by writing new code for the devices.  Such a waste to condemn hardware that is still quite capable in today's environments but completely insecure so instead of fixing it our choice is to open up our systems to hacks, or throw the perfectly working NSA device into a landfill... horrible.

  • Agree with Sam, horrible to not update feature like this!

  • I have a NAS540 and it is going thru the same thing. Not being seen in network.  I had to put WDDS on all my linux servers to get them seen in NETWORK.

Unless Zyxel actually confirms they work with SMB2 or SMB3 I would NOT upgrade to ANY of them!

"If this is not an option for you, you might consider an upgrade to a unit of the recent NAS series (NAS326, NAS520, NAS540, NAS542) which supports SMBv2."
