However, users occasionally encounter issues that may affect the performance of their NAS devices. This article provides step-by-step solutions for common Zyxel NAS issues, including pulsating fan noise, NAS drive detection problems, slow file transfer speeds, high CPU usage, and port speed issues. Additionally, we've included cases from the Zyxel forum to provide real-world examples and solutions.

Pulsating Fan Noise

NAS35x Series Fan Operation and Troubleshooting

The fan in the NAS35x series operates at a constant speed but is cycled on and off by the controller. This design results in a pulsating noise, which is normal and cannot be eliminated even with a fan replacement. However, if the fan produces rattling or unusual noises, follow these steps:

1. **Check Connections:** Ensure the fan’s connection cables are secure and not causing interference.
2. **Fan Condition:** If the fan is clear of obstructions but still makes excessive noise, the fan may need replacement.

To resolve this, please:
Create an RMA Request: Generate an RMA number and include it with your device.
Send to Zyxel Service Center Ship the device with the RMA number for inspection.

Note: If the fan operates normally but is loud due to its design, no further action is required.

NAS Drive Detection Issues

  • Ensure drives are properly seated in their bays.
  • Check that drives are compatible with the NAS model.
  • Use the NAS web interface to check for disk status:

Control Panel > Storage > Disk Management

  • Format the drives if they are not recognized, ensuring all data is backed up first.

Slow File Transfer Speeds

  • Ensure the network is not congested or experiencing high traffic.
  • Use wired connections instead of wireless for better stability and speed.
  • Check the NAS and connected devices for gigabit network capability.

High CPU Issues on Zyxel NAS

If your NAS is consistently running at 90% CPU or higher, follow these steps to deactivate two potentially responsible functions:

Note: Consider if you need these services. Disabling them will stop thumbnail generation and media streaming via the Twonky server.

Log in:

  • Enter the NAS IP address in your browser.
  • Use admin credentials (default: username “admin”, password “1234”).

Disable Thumbnail Generation:

  • Click on the myZyxel cloud icon in the upper left corner.
  • Toggle off “Generating thumbnail for multimedia files in shared folders.”

Disable Twonky Server:

  • Close the myZyxel cloud window.
  • Open the “Control Panel” app.
  • Navigate to Service > Media Server.
  • Uncheck “Enable Twonky Server” and click Apply.

Port Speed Issues

We faced some issues with the port speed of the LAN Interface on our NAS326 when it is connected to another Vendor Router, for example, the issue was found in connection with Fritzbox 7590 or Fritzbox 6660. The issue shows that the port speed changed from 1Gbit/s to 100Mbit/s after a restart of the NAS.

Please install the latest version of Firmware , the Interface is again working with the correct speed of 1Gbit/s

Please install the latest version of the update.
