Zyxel Network-Attached Storage [NAS] - Setting up the zCloud on the NAS and iPhone and Android

The article guides users on setting up the zCloud app to transfer files between mobile devices (iPhone or Android) and a Zyxel NAS. It covers configuring network settings, ensuring proper port forwarding, and connecting the app to the NAS. Detailed steps for both iOS and Android platforms are provided, including how to find the NAS, input necessary addresses and credentials, and enable secure connections via HTTPS.

End-of-Life Product Notice: We regret to inform you that the product "Zyxel NAS Devices" has reached the end of its useful life. As a result, technical support for this device may be limited. Please be aware that any manipulation or use of a device that is already end-of-life is entirely at your own risk. You can find a list of obsolete devices, including their retirement and end-of-support dates, at the link below. This page also provides the latest updated version for your device: End of Life

To be able to access the NAS from on the way, a few conditions must be given.

  • You must obtain an IPv4 address from your Internet service provider (ISP). This must not be behind double NAT.
You can check it by checking your router's IP address provided by your ISP.
    IPv4 example: 85.241.35.14
    IPv6 example: 2001:4dd0:af14:8233:3a10:d5ff:fe81:d6e
If the IPv4 address is in one of these three areas, it can be assumed that there is a double NAT:
    10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
    172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
    192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255
These address ranges are private addresses. Please check which case applies to you.
Please do not confuse these address ranges with the addresses you use internally.
You can have your public IP determined by services offered on the Internet. If the IP determined by one of these services matches the IP provided by the ISP, you can assume that you have IPv4.

(Example of public IPv4 and IPv6 addresses in AVM FritzBox)

  • If your ISP assigns you an IPv4 address, but this is not always the same, you need a way to resolve the IP address. Zyxel offers here the use of the "zyxel.me" domain. For the benefit of this please look here: myZyxelCloud Setup - Video Tutorial
This video already describes how to connect the NAS to the zCloud app, but using UPnP.
  • To be able to reach the NAS externally via HTTPS, you should open port 443 in the direction of the NAS in your router. If you want to use a different port, you should redirect another port (for example, 4433) from external to internal. For this, you should also consult the manual of your router.

Now that the requirements have been clarified, we can start with the configuration.
(Here it is assumed that the port 4433 is redirected from external to 443)

Create a user on the NAS and assign user-specific rights.

Install the zCloud app from the respective portal on your mobile device and open it.

iOS:

  • Under Find a NAS, tap the + icon in the top right corner
  • Enter here under IP / Netwerkname your zyxel.me address (for example your-nas.zyxel.me).
  • If you use a port other than 443 you have to enter it here as well. The address should look like this: ihrnas.zyxel.me:4433
  • Enter the created user and his password in the corresponding fields
    Enable HTTPS
  • If you wish, you can now activate Remember username and password.
  • Touch Sign In at the top right

Android

  • Open the menu in the upper left corner
  • Tap on "Find a NAS"
  • tap the + symbol in the top right corner
  • Enter here under IP / Netwerkname your zyxel.me address (for example your-nas.zyxel.me).
  • If you use a port other than 443 you have to enter it here as well. The address should look like this: your-nas.zyxel.me:4433
  • Enter the created user and his password in the corresponding fields
  • Enable HTTPS
If you wish, you can now activate Remember username and password.
  • You can now check whether the password you have entered is correct by ticking "Show password"
  • Touch Sign In at the top right

Now you have successfully set up the NAS on your mobile device.

Just a heads-up:Zyxel NAS devices have reached the end of their support period. We understand this might be inconvenient, so to help you out, please visit our forum or explore the NAS section in our knowledge base for all the details.
