What to do if your Zyxel NR2301 router doesn’t connect to the network after crossing a border

If your Zyxel NR2301 router stopped connecting to the mobile network after crossing a border, it may be caused by roaming settings. For example, the router may still try to connect to your old mobile operator and not switch to the new one.

This can happen during travel between countries. Your phone may connect right away because it updates network settings more quickly. But the router may need extra steps to connect to a new network.

This guide gives you step-by-step instructions to help fix the problem and restore the mobile connection while roaming.

Question:

My Zyxel NR2301 router stopped working after I crossed the border. It doesn’t connect to a mobile signal. What should I do?

Answer:

This problem can happen when you travel from one country to another. The router sometimes cannot switch to the new mobile network by itself.

For example:

You travel from Germany to the Netherlands, or from the Netherlands to Belgium. After crossing the border, your phone may work fine, but your router may not be able to connect to the internet. This is because it tries to connect to the old network, which is no longer available.

1. Check and Enable Data Roaming

If you are using the device outside the country where the SIM card was issued, you may need to enable data roaming.

  • Enable roaming through the device display

On the LCD display ,go to "Menu" - "Network Connection" - Enable "Roaming mode"
  • Enable roaming via the Zyxel NR2301 web interface

Open the Zyxel NR2301 web interface (via browser while connected to its Wi-Fi).

Go to the APP Module - Network Settings

Make sure roaming is enabled. If it is not, activate it.
Save the changes and reboot the device.

Note: Without roaming enabled, the device will not be able to register with a foreign operator's network.

2. Reboot the Device

This is a simple yet often effective step:

  • Turn off the device and wait for 10-15 seconds.

  • Turn it back on.

  • Wait while the modem reinitialises and attempts to connect to the network.

Rebooting helps reset temporary modem errors, reinitiate network registration processes, and apply updated settings.
Also, keep in mind that registering with a new operator may take some time, sometimes up to 10–15 minutes.

3.  Register the SIM Card via a Mobile Phone

If the SIM card hasn't been used for a while or wasn't activated properly:

  • Turn off the Zyxel NR2301 and remove the SIM card.

  • Insert the SIM card into a mobile phone.

Make sure:

Airplane mode is "OFF"

Mobile data is "ON"

Roaming is on (if you're roaming)

  • Wait for network registration (signal bars and operator name like T-Mobile NL or Proximus should appear).

  • Optionally, open a website to check internet access.

  • Turn off the phone, remove the SIM, and reinsert it into the Zyxel NR2301.

  • Turn the router on and wait — it should connect automatically.

4. Switch from Automatic to Manual Network Selection

Automatic network selection may not always choose the best operator. To switch manually:

  1. Open the Zyxel NR2301 web interface (via browser while connected to its Wi-Fi).

  2. Go to the APP Module - Network Settings

  3. Choose an available operator (e.g., Proximus, Orange, T-Mobile).

  4. Save changes and reboot the device.

Note: This option is only available via the web interface, not from the device screen.

5. Update the Device to the Latest Firmware

Outdated firmware may affect roaming or network registration. To update:

On the LCD display, go to "Menu" - "FW upgrade" - "Check for update"
