Zyxel Multy [backhaul] - Ethernet backbone networks what you need to know

Backhaul refers to the connections (like copper cables, fiber optics, or wireless links) that link the main network to smaller local networks. This setup helps expand network coverage so users can access the internet through these regional networks.

Multy X, Multy Plus, and Multy Mini are capable of wireless and wired connection between each. Please note that this kind of association is only possible between devices of the same model.

When the root node uses the Ethernet cable to connect to the extender node, Zyxel Multy WiFi System supports both wired and wireless backhaul simultaneously, and the best traffic path will depend on the system calculation. It means that Mutly WiFi System will analyze the environment and the throughput between each node to choose the best transfer path for your data, the traffic may go through the wired backhaul or the wireless backhaul.

Before you set up the Ethernet backhaul connection, make sure that you already paired all nodes in your Multy WiFi System wirelessly. And the Ethernet ports on Multy are rated at 1 Gbps. Make sure that the Ethernet cable you connected with is 1Gps cable or faster. Please put each Multys in short distances, and run the installation on all of Multy wirelessly before you build an Ethernet backhaul, make sure all of them can work.  After the Multy installation is completed, please move them to the position, and plug the power cable and Ethernet cable as below topology.

Step 1. Please set up Multy U (WSR30) WiFi System via wireless backhaul.

Step 2. Plug the Ethernet cable with the LAN port of the root node and the WAN port of the extender node.

  • With the Switch:

In the scenario (With the Switch), this switch will only use for Ethernet backhaul communicate. If any client devices connects to this switch, it will not able to access Internet.

Step 1. Please set up Multy U (WSR30) WiFi System via wireless backhaul.

Step 2. Power off the switch.

Step 3. Using two Ethernet cables, the LAN port of the root node and the WAN port of the extender node connects to the switch.

Step 4. Power on the Switch.

Multy system can have many combinations, below are a few examples.

Multy MINI

Multy mini also supports Ethernet backhaul, but please note,

  •  Multy mini requires only Multy X as a Root
  •  Multy Mini cannot work with Multy Plus or Multy U
